Abstract

On connaît le mot de Renan à La Borderie, à propos de l’ignorance du breton par ce dernier : « Cela a dû vous gêner souvent dans vos travaux. » Si l’on en juge par l’ampleur des recherches du grand historien breton, on peut dire au moins que de cette gêne il n’a pas été suffisamment convaincu pour estimer devoir apprendre la langue. Mais La Borderie était-il une exception à son époque ? Sans tenter ici un examen détaillé, on peut avancer que la grande majorité de ceux qui se sont occupés d’histoire de Bretagne au XIXe siècle ne connaissaient pas le breton. Alors que sur bien des points essentiels, ils renouvellent l’histoire de Bretagne, sur le plan de la langue, ils ne manifestent pas une meilleure connaissance que leurs prédécesseurs de l’Ancien Régime.
