Abstract

En 2011 en Mauritanie des militants ont été emprisonnés pour « avoir évoqué l’esclavage » alors que l’État a aboli cette pratique depuis trente ans. Pourtant aucune mesure n’a été prise par les différents gouvernements pour mettre fin à cette pratique. Les fugitifs sont souvent remis au maître par la police, les associations abolitionnistes sont menacées et les juges refusent de juger ces faits « puisque la loi en a aboli la pratique ». L’État refuse de reconnaître la persistance de l’esclavage.Les engagements de l’État dans les conventions des Nations unies interdisant l’esclavage s’imposent pourtant aux gouvernements successifs et les statuts de la Cour pénale internationale font désormais de cette pratique un « crime contre l’humanité ».Amnesty International demande à la Mauritanie de prendre toutes les mesures pour prévenir et réprimer l’esclavage et à la communauté internationale d’agir auprès de l’État mauritanien pour abolir cette pratique.
