Since its foundation in 1713, the Real Academia Española (RAE) has been a pioneer in language preservation. With the dawn of the digital age, the RAE has also increasingly adapted its mission to today’s demands and especially to the increasing importance of social networks by evolving the nature of the RAE, establishing profiles on various social networks, and creating a constant online presence. In particular, the RAE uses Twitter for direct communication with the public. But the RAE’s flagship is the successful online campaign Lengua madre solo hay una in which the RAE criticizes the extensive use of English terms, especially in the marketing industry. Regarding the online presence of the RAE, this article aims to examine the functions and possibilities of social networks for the RAE in light of its self-proclaimed mission of language maintenance.
