Cet article propose une entrée dans l’histoire féministe anglaise des années 1970, peu connue en France. S’appuyant sur une analyse des contextes militants d’émergence de cette histoire, il montre qu’elle constitue une réappropriation critique d’une histoire « par en bas » socialiste incarnée à la fin des années 1960 par E.P. Thompson et le mouvement du History Workshop autour de Raphael Samuel. L’article défend l’idée qu’au cœur de cette histoire par en bas se trouve le projet d’inventer une expérience des archives, à travers laquelle créer une connexion à la fois intime et collective aux expériences des personnes ordinaires et des femmes du passé. L’enjeu d’une telle démarche est de développer des formes radicalement démocratisées de production et de circulation du savoir, et ce faisant, de nourrir des mobilisations socialistes et féministes « par en bas ».

This article offers an introduction to the English feminist history of the 70s, little known in France, and it analyzes the activist contexts in which this history emerged. The paper shows how this history critically reappropriates a socialist history « from below » which was represented, at the end of the 60s, by E.P. Thompson and the History Workshop movement around Raphael Samuel. The core of the history from below has been the project of inventing an experience of the archives, through which to create a connexion both intimate and collective to the experiences of ordinary people and women of the past. This approach aims to promote the development of radically democratised forms of knowledge-production and circulation, and thus, the sustenance of socialist and feminist mobilizing « from below ».
