Abstract

L’opera feerique Rusalka d’Antonin Dvořak rassemble plusieurs contes europeens qui parlent de sirenes. Le librettiste, Jaroslav Kvapil, a souvent declare que ses sources etaient trois versions du xixe siecle qui avaient reformule ces contes : Ondine de Friedrich de La Motte-Fouque (1811), le conte de Hans Christian Andersen La Petite Sirene (1837) et la piece de Gerhard Hauptmann La Cloche engloutie. Kvapil et Dvořak connaissaient egalement les legendes de sirenes slaves, encore appelees rusalki. Une autre source importante, bien que celle-ci soit restee non reconnue, est l’histoire medievale, en langue francaise, de Melusine qui avait migre et survecu a travers toute l’Europe. Le destin de Rusalka, qui est isolee a la fois dans le monde humain mais aussi surnaturel, ressemble beaucoup a celui de Melusine. Le traitement magique par Dvořak du livret de Kvapil est influence par les echos de l’histoire de Melusine qui courent en filigrane dans l’opera. L’histoire francaise de Melusine, dans ses transformations pan-europeennes, a fini par devenir partie integrante d’un renouveau apparemment bien « tcheque » de l’opera et de la tradition du conte de fees. Paradoxalement, le traitement de l’ancienne matiere feerique par Dvořak a signifie son entree dans la modernite et sa maniere de renouveler l’opera, comme ce fut egalement le cas pour des compositeurs plus tardifs tels que Debussy, Bartok et Richard Strauss.
