Les villes portuaires de Santa Cruz de Tenerife et de Las Palmas de Gran Canaria ont connu un changement important tout au long du xixe siècle. Au cours de cette transformation, une place importante a été accordée aux arbres, non seulement en vue d’embellir les villes, mais aussi du fait des théories hygiénistes qui associaient la végétation à la salubrité et à l’hygiène. Dans cette perspective d’écologisation de la ville, la presse, la société civile, ainsi que les réseaux de connaissances et de contacts des professionnels canariens, notamment des médecins, ont joué un rôle fondamental.
