Noblesse et animal domestique au XIXe siècle

Abstract

Du cygne au cheval et du paon au chien de chasse, le noble entretient avec l'animal des rapports spécifiques. Depuis des siècles, la domestication de la bête sauvage symbolise son ambition de maîtriser le temps comme l'espace. La pérennité du bestiaire de la symbolique héraldique n'exclut pas les modes successives, à la faveur desquelles l'animal se fait l'attribut de la distinction et du luxe, du chat à la levrette, du singe au perroquet et de la tortue au chien. Avec le XIXe siècle, toutefois, l'animal familier reflue dans la sphère de l'intime et de l'affectif. Si la noblesse joue un rôle pionnier et anticipateur dans la reconnaissance de l'animal comme être vivant et sensible, dans les rangs de la SPA par exemple, la sensibilité nouvelle atteste une perte d'identité qui suscite les surenchères à l'excentricité de la Belle Époque.
