Abstract

Outreau, nom d’une ville du nord de la France, s’est, depuis quelques années, largement émancipé de son sens locatif initial en acquérant à travers les discours d’autres valeurs. Ainsi ce qu’on appelle communément « l’affaire d’Outreau » ou tout simplement « Outreau » est devenu dans les discours publics récents (2006-2008) le type par excellence du fiasco judiciaire. Outreau n’en est pas pour autant univoque, et les discours qui mobilisent ce nom dans son sens événementiel, notamment en cherchant les « causes » du fiasco, en éclairent toute l’épaisseur. Dans cet article, nous cherchons à cerner et décrire ce qui, dans les discours, d’une part révèle l’épaisseur acquise du sens de Outreau, d’autre part participe diachroniquement à la construction de ce sens. Pour ce faire, nous avons constitué un corpus de presse, considéré comme un échantillon de ce qui est/a été dit à propos d’Outreau. Le corpus, qui part des premiers textes se référant à « l’affaire » (fin 2001) et se clôt début 2006, est partitionné en cinq sous-corpus centrés sur cinq époques considérées comme des étapes. L’analyse combine des marqueurs de niveaux différents : distributionnels (prépositions associés à Outreau; co-occurrents d’Outreau ou de mots comme réseau), sémantiques (tropes et comparaisons; nomination des « actants » d’Outreau), énonciatifs et dialogiques.
