Abstract

Alors que beaucoup d’auteurs ont depeint la Premiere Guerre mondiale comme un affreux carnage denue de sens, certains lui ont confere une signification spirituelle et tenterent de la presenter comme un combat pour les plus hautes valeurs de l’humanite. La Chanson de Vaux-Douaumont, par l’auteur catholique francais Henry Bordeaux est une illustration parfaite de cette tendance : decrivant les combats de 1915 dans les environs de Verdun pour le controle des forts de Vaux et de Douaumont, il les montre comme les etapes d’une guerre sainte et compare la victoire francaise a la revanche de Charlemagne apres Roncevaux. Cette contribution se concentrera sur les trois principaux arguments utilises par Bordeaux dans ce processus : ses references au Moyen Âge, ses commentaires sur la mort des soldats au champ d’honneur et le portrait qu’il dresse des Allemands en tant qu’ennemis desesperes mais feroces, combattant pour un empire oppressif et cruel devant etre terrasse par la Vertu de la France et de ses allies.
