Los huaycos que afectaron al distrito limeño de Lurigancho-Chosica el 9 de marzo de 1987 originaron uno de los mayores desastres conocidos en Lima durante el siglo XX. Si la causa del evento es natural, el desastre está directamente ligado a un desarrollo urbano que, durante numerosos años, ha ignorado el peligro. El artículo presenta las consecuencias del evento, analiza sus causas y evidencia las dificultades de manejo de la crisis. Muestra igualmente que más de veinte años después de su ocurrencia, las acciones destinadas a reducir la vulnerabilidad de la población no han logrado impedir que esta última se instale de nuevo en las zonas afectadas. Se han limitado a realizar obras de protección cuyo mantenimiento no está garantizado.
