Affairisme dynastique et dandysme au Caire vers 1900

Abstract

Cette contribution explore, à partir d’un bâtiment construit par l’architecte Antonio Lasciac en 1897-1898 et des domaines fonciers auxquels il est directement connecté, une forme particulière d’urbanisation spéculative menée dans ce qui allait devenir le centre-ville du Caire, par le biais d’une vaste opération de remembrement de terrains constitués en waqf. L’initiative implique deux grandes familles ottomanes vivant entre Le Caire et Istanbul, le khédive Abbas Hilmi II lui-même, et des actionnaires européens. Engagée dans une double perspective d’histoire sociale de l’architecture et d’histoire urbaine, l’étude montre comment l’affairisme dynastique égyptien et le capitalisme européen ont œuvré conjointement à la transformation du Caire aux premiers temps de l’occupation britannique, en s’accommodant du système du waqf, institution centrale du droit musulman, fondée sur le principe de l’inaliénabilité et de la pérennité de biens immobilisés en tout ou partie au profit d’œuvres pies. Les nouveaux styles de vie et formes de dandysme qui ont accompagné la mutation urbaine sont au cœur de l’une des toutes premières fictions de la littérature arabe due à la plume de Muḥammad al-Muwayliḥī. L’opération foncière et immobilière se solde, fortuitement et de fil en aiguille, par l’émergence d’un « Broadway cairote » rue ʿImād al-Dīn.
