Abstract

Carmen Mondragón (1893-1978), conocida popularmente como Nahui Olin, fue una extraordinaria mujer artista Mexicana, que durante las décadas de 1920 y 1930 produjo pinturas y poemas muy originales. Aunque Nahui es generalmente conocida como la musa que inspiró algunos retratos a destacados artistas del Renacimiento mexicano, las imágenes que la mujer artista creó de sí misma, una serie de muy provocativos autorretratos desnuda, todavía no han recibido la atención académica que merecen. A través de un estudio completo del contexto histórico en el que ambos grupos de obras fueron creadas, el análisis visual de las pinturas en las que Nahui es el objeto o el sujeto de las pinturas, y un estudio crítico de la producción literaria de Nahui, en este trabajo demuestro que los autorretratos creados por la artista, fueron creados, por lo menos en parte para contrarrestar y refutar su imagen como símbolo erótico, tal y como había sido contruída por la mirada masculina, misma que fue perpetuada posteriormente en la historiografía tradicional del arte en México.
