Abstract

L’élection de l’Ordre de Saint Jérôme pour occuper le monastère de l’Escurial place de facto son patron, saint Jérôme, au cœur d’une stratégie minutieusement orchestrée visant à faire de la fabrique royale un véritable Temple de la Contre-Réforme doublé d’un lieu d’exaltation de la Monarchie hispanique. En cela, le regard porté sur la vie et l’œuvre du Docteur de l’Église à travers toute la symbolique attachée au palais-monastère mais aussi à travers son vaste programme architectural et iconographique répond à un ensemble de normes bien précises. Ce saint Jérôme « hispanisé » pour se conformer en tout point aux exigences de l’édifice royal procède d’un double discours, celui du Roi prudent refusant ou acceptant les œuvres réalisées dans le cadre de son mécénat mais aussi et surtout celui du hiéronymite fray José de Sigüenza, célèbre historien de la construction du monastère de l’Escurial et auteur d’une Vida de San Jerónimo (Madrid, 1595), qui pense le lien entre les différentes fonctions du palais-monastère et la présence démultipliée du saint en ses endroits les plus symboliques.
