L’éthique reproductive de Jonathan Glover : un juste milieu entre conservatisme et transhumanisme ?

Abstract

L’éthique reproductive de Jonathan Glover se situe à la croisée des débats bioéthiques contemporains, entre la sacralité de la vie défendue par certains courants conservateurs et l’optimisme transhumaniste des partisans du « meilleur enfant possible ». À travers l’analyse de ses ouvrages majeurs, nous montrons que Glover adopte une approche gradualiste du statut moral de l’embryon et du fœtus, critique de tout absolutisme, et qu’il défend une responsabilité parentale orientée vers la prévention de la souffrance et le respect de l’autonomie future de l’enfant. Hostile à l’idée d’un perfectionnisme procréatif imposant l’obligation d’engendrer l’« enfant idéal », il met en avant un cadre conséquentialiste prudent, soucieux d’articuler le bien-être des générations à venir et la pluralité des conceptions de la vie bonne. Loin d’une utopie post-humaine, son éthique invite à penser une régulation mesurée de l’ingénierie génétique : il ne s’agit pas de fabriquer « le meilleur des mondes possibles », mais simplement de garantir des conditions de vie dignes et ouvertes à l’épanouissement.
