Invisible death rites in the early Neolithic: Results of an archaeothanatological analysis of funerary practices in Linearbandkeramik settlements

Abstract

Dans l’étude des pratiques funéraires, les objets funéraires sont traditionnellement considérés comme la principale forme de preuve. Cela n’est pas moins vrai pour le Néolithique ancien d’Europe centrale, où la culture matérielle des tombes a dominé les discussions sur tous les aspects de la mort, des inégalités de genre à la parenté, pendant des décennies. Les sépultures non meublées, souvent situées dans des contextes de peuplement et contenant plus fréquemment des corps de femmes et d’enfants, ont donc été négligées. Cependant, l’application de nouvelles perspectives théoriques, telles que celles issues de l’archéothanatologie, fournit de nouveaux matériaux pour l’interprétation des pratiques mortuaires. Si le corps lui-même est considéré comme l’élément central de la sépulture et étudié en conséquence, de nouveaux éléments de la pratique mortuaire et de la diversité des traitements sont mis en évidence. Cet article fournit des résultats qui soutiennent l’application d’une approche "corps d’abord" à l’étude des sépultures, et sa contribution potentielle à notre compréhension du traitement funéraire au sein de la culture Linearbandkeramik (LBK) d’Europe centrale.
