Do iberismo ao lusotropicalismo: o percurso intelectual de Gilberto Freyre

Abstract

O objetivo deste artigo é investigar a produção intelectual de Gilberto Freyre no período pós-II Guerra, com ênfase no lusotropicalismo. Essa proposta visa compreender a permanência da tradição intelectual iberista de fins do século XIX e começos do XX – em particular dos teóricos espanhóis Miguel de Unamuno e Ángel Ganivet – na produção freyriana dos anos 1950 até o começo dos anos 1960. Em Casa Grande & Senzala (2003) e Sobrados e Mucambos (1936) já se notam claros traços iberistas, que reaparecem, com ainda mais potência na produção intelectual em torno do lusotropicalismo, já no pós-Guerra, período de Guerra Fria e de crise do colonialismo português. Em certo sentido, o lusotropicalismo é uma atualização do iberismo. Apesar de Gilberto Freyre demonstrar-se em diversos momentos afinado ao regime de Salazar, ele foi antes um intelectual que imaginou um lugar de centralidade para o Brasil, em aliança com o colonialismo português.
