Abstract

La investigación profundiza en la fascinante historia del uso del plumón de pato andino como materia prima para la elaboración de textiles en la Nueva España en la segunda mitad del siglo XVI. El artículo identifica específicamente la especie Cairina Moschata como aquella a la que las fuentes primarias hacen referencia con el nombre de “pato peruano” y perutototl, analizando su introducción y aclimatación en diversas regiones de Nueva España. También arroja luz sobre las maneras en que las comunidades femeninas de artífices especializadas en las labores textiles y plumarias adoptaron este nuevo material. A través del análisis de la cultura material y la historia social del arte, este artículo explora el aprovechamiento de las plumas de pato andino en relación a las condiciones políticas, económicas y productivas de las maestras del textil y la pluma durante los albores del virreinato novohispano.
