El director chileno Patricio Guzmán mantiene una intensa relación con la literatura, perceptible tanto en los temas como en la forma de sus películas. Esta conexión no se limita a adaptaciones literarias o ejercicios de intertextualidad, sino que se trata de un diálogo creativo con la escritura literaria –especialmente con el ensayo–, que afecta la manera en que el cineasta reflexiona sobre el mundo a través del audiovisual. Analizaremos esa conexión entre cine y literatura a partir de tres mediometrajes para televisión inspirados en libros: Pueblo en vilo (1995), La isla de Robinson Crusoe (1999) y Mi Jules Verne (2005). Nuestra hipótesis es que en ellos Guzmán se aleja progresivamente del documental tradicional para adentrarse en el ensayo fílmico.
