Abstract

Le Cubain José Lizama Lima (1910-1976) n’a presque jamais quitté son île natale et pourtant son lien avec la France fut à la fois fort et singulier. Ce livre souhaite lui rendre un hommage paradoxal, à l’image de ces paradoxes qu’aimait le « voyageur immobile », en un lieu qu'aurait pu désigner le azar concurrente : l’École normale supérieure. C’est là que se sont tenus les travaux préliminaires à ce volume, tout près de l’hôtel de la rue Gay-Lussac où aurait logé Oppiano Licario, personnage romanesque auquel son périple fait parcourir une « Île de France » confondue à plaisir avec l’île de la Cité. Lezama Lima est le poète d’une île, Cuba, dont il a su faire naître le mythe d’une universelle insularité, et la France l’a admiré – ses romans ont été traduits, ses poèmes le sont moins.Le lecteur désireux de découvrir ou de redécouvrir Lezama Lima peut trouver ici huit études critiques suivies de deux lettres inédites du poète, à R. Altmann (1973) et à G. Llinás (1975), accompagnées de la reproduction intégrale des xylographies de Llinás pour les Poemas de Lezama édités par Altmann (Paris, 1972).L’ensemble est prolongé par la traduction d’une vingtaine d’essais de Lezama Lima, inédits en français, qui témoignent de sa passion singulière pour la langue de Rimbaud, de Mallarmé et de Valéry, mais aussi de Montaigne, de Pascal, de Bossuet, de Claudel, de Saint-John Perse ou encore d’Éluard – et pour les peintres Matisse et Balthus.
