Hacia una nueva visión de Hermenegildo: el tratamiento del príncipe visigodo en la Historia legionensis

Abstract

La mención explícita al martirio del príncipe visigodo Hermenegildo en la tradición cronística peninsular se halla, por vez primera, en la Historia legionensis, compuesta en León en el siglo XII. Como consecuencia de esta y otras alteraciones del relato, este testimonio representó un cambio radical en la valoración del personaje dentro del género historiográfico, pues pasó de ser considerado un rebelde a erigirse en mártir del catolicismo conforme a esta nueva versión de los hechos. En el presente trabajo, tratamos de explicar este fenómeno como consecuencia de la evolución del mito neogótico en función del nuevo discurso historiográfico promovido por la realeza castellano-leonesa en el siglo XII. Para llevar a cabo esta tarea de reescritura, se empleó como fuente principal los Dialogi (594) de Gregorio Magno, cuya incidencia sobre la cultura hispana de la época fue muy acusada.
