Abstract

Las excepcionales propiedades del concreto lo colocaron como el material de construccion mas utilizado a fines del siglo pasado y principios del presente. Sin embargo, el tiempo de vida util de una estructura esta en funcion de su fabricacion, del servicio que prestara y las condiciones a las que estara sometido. Es deseable que una obra se mantenga en buen estado estructural, quimico y estetico por tiempo indefinido sin reparaciones o rehabilitaciones mayores que resulten demasiado costosas. En la realidad esto es dificil de alcanzar, ya que la interaccion con el medio ambiente es uno de principales factores que causan deterioro a la infraestructura de concreto. La carbonatacion y la presencia de cloruros a nivel del acero de refuerzo se consideran las causas principales de corrosion del acero de refuerzo. Existen numerosas tecnologias para reparar danos causados por corrosion y prevenir o minimizar un dano que pueda ocurrir. Las estrategias para retrasar el inicio de la corrosion en estructuras nuevas y que incrementan su vida util se categorizan como estrategias de “prevencion”; las tecnologias y materiales desarrollados para reparar el dano inducido por corrosion son referidos como “reparacion” y el termino que se utiliza si el proposito elimina, controla la causa o interfiere con el proceso de deterioro para detener, controlar, o minimizarla es “rehabilitacion”. Para implementar la estrategia adecuada, es necesario realizar una evaluacion para conocer el nivel de dano de la estructura. La Secretaria de Comunicaciones y Transportes (SCT) por medio de la Administracion Portuaria Integral (API) administra 16 puertos federales. Por el sitio donde se encuentran los muelles, se promovio la participacion del Instituto Mexicano del Transporte (IMT) para realizar la evaluacion y diagnostico de 13 muelles. En este capitulo se presenta la metodologia que se siguio para realizar dichas actividades.
