Abstract

In dit hoofdstuk wordt de belangstelling voor de Biobased economy verklaard, zoals de beperking van de afhankelijkheid van fossiele brandstoffen en de beperking van de uitstoot van broeikasgassen. Daarnaast worden factoren besproken die het gebruik van biomassa voor de productie van biobased producten belemmeren. Zo is er het gevaar van gebrek aan duurzaamheid bij de productie van biomassa, zijn er nog veel technologische uitdagingen, is er het gevaar dat het gebruik van biomassa in non-food producten leidt tot concurrentie met voedsel en is er sprake van relatief hoge transportkosten. Ook worden markt- en institutionele factoren die het succes van de biobased economy bepalen besproken. Bij de conclusies wordt gesteld dat er vraag is naar interdisciplinair onderzoek waarin verschillende aspecten van de biobased economy in samenhang worden geanalyseerd
