Abstract

Résumé Le projet d’un périodique à caractère encyclopédique renaît en 1795, peu de temps après la disparition du Journal encyclopédique fondé par Pierre Rousseau en 1756. Dans le prospectus annonçant la parution de leur périodique, Millin, Noël et Warens affirment explicitement la filiation du Magasin encyclopédique avec plusieurs journaux d’Ancien Régime, dont celui de Rousseau. S’inscrivant dans une logique de prospection cumulative des savoirs, le Journal encyclopédique et le Magasin encyclopédique considèrent les récits de voyage comme des outils du savoir, comme des ouvrages instructifs dont l’objet est la diffusion de découvertes et de nouvelles données sur le monde. Tous deux accordent de ce fait une grande attention à ce genre, mais comment valident-ils ces nouvelles connaissances ?
