Abstract

Résumé Pendant longtemps, le cinéma français a surtout utilisé le gendarme comme un figurant. La sortie du Gendarme de Saint-Tropez , en 1964, a modifié cette situation. La starification de Louis de Funès a permis à la figure du gendarme d’acquérir une plus grande visibilité dans la société française des années soixante, jusqu’à en faire un héros populaire à travers le personnage de Cruchot. En six films, de 1964 à 1982, Cruchot est devenu une incarnation, en partie caricaturale, du gendarme et de son inscription dans la société. L’étude de ce corpus permet de s’interroger sur la mise en scène d’un corps social, sur les réactions institutionnelles qu’elle suscite et sur le discours idéologique qu’elle élabore. Ainsi la Gendarmerie nationale oscille-t-elle entre condamnation et utilisation du stéréotype que développe cette série cinématographique. L’examen de ces six films donne aussi à voir les hésitations de la France des Trente glorieuses entre la modernisation du pays et la persistance d’un modèle traditionnel, particulièrement sur le plan des mœurs, dont Cruchot est un vecteur zélé.
