Dans les marges des théories de Creuzer et de Hegel sur l’art symbolique, Flaubert entreprend à travers Salammbô de reconstituer un état poétique de la croyance, tout en faisant sentir à l’homme moderne combien il est coupé de ce sentiment religieux. Le lecteur garde cependant parfois l’impression que Flaubert se joue de lui, en lui faisant chercher des symboles là où il n’y a de sens que littéral. On essaie ici de tenir cette double lecture contradictoire : Salammbô , roman de mystagogue et blague d’artiste.
