Abstract

Résumé Si l’exemplarité britannique a connu une réactualisation récente en France sous le signe du « libéralisme », elle plonge ses racines au 18 e siècle, lorsque la petite voisine d’outre-Manche commença de menacer l’hégémonie de la grande monarchie. La construction du référent britannique trouve ses débuts dans l’intérêt pris par des hommes de lettres, journalistes et administrateurs à l’étonnante réussite de cette « République » commerçante et parlementaire. Elle procède de multiples transferts culturels à usage domestique, qui contribuèrent à former une rhétorique patriotique au c œur de l’absolutisme. Le détour par l’« Angleterre » permettait de critiquer l’ordre politique dans des formes acceptables, et d’élaborer l’idée d’une communauté civique fondée non plus seulement sur l’honneur ou l’amour du Roi, mais sur l’intégration égalitaire des citoyens méritants, utiles et vertueux.
