La transition urbaine est perçue comme l’un des aspects centraux de la croissance économique européenne du xix e siècle. Définie comme un processus conduisant les sociétés à de forts taux d’urbanisation, elle résulte à la fois de migrations massives des campagnes vers les villes, et de la mise en place d’infrastructures publiques qui rendent possibles de fortes densités de population.
