Abstract

Le périurbain pavillonnaire français est régulièrement associé à des territoires sans qualité. On dénonce sa mocheté, son absence de vertu écologique, ses modes de vie standardisés, son aliénation. Ces jugements relèvent cependant davantage d’une attitude urbano-centrée que d’analyses éclairées. Depuis des décennies les expertises des métropoles ont produit des angles morts, des zones définies par défaut : autour de la ville (périurbaine, périmétropolitaine), après la campagne (post-rurale), au-delà de l’économie (post-industrielle). Il n’existe pas, à proprement parler, d’analyses positives de ces lieux dont les modes d’habiter sont pourtant fortement chargés en imaginaire et propices à la créativité. À force d’immersion, j’y ai découvert que les « périurbains » étaient une fiction de sociologues et de géographes accomplissant le tour de force de constituer un groupe compact et autonome. Si les villes produisent désormais des émotions esthétiques standardisées, les périphéries offrent au contraire des laboratoires d’expérimentations illimitées, où chaque habitant peut projeter ses scénarios sensibles. Bien sûr, ces territoires comportent les traits apparents de l’aliénation (mobilité pendulaire, dépendance à l’automobile et à l’hypermarché, vie sociale stéréotypée par suite d’absence d’espace public), mais ce zoning illimité d’ambiances indistinctes – absence quasi totale de planification urbaine – constitue aussi une puissante réserve poétique.
