Abstract

Inséparables du pouvoir depuis le XIII e siècle au moins, les archives constituent ce par quoi s’opère la transformation de la force en droit. Leur conservation et leur classement déterminent les conditions objectives du travail des chroniqueurs, des juristes ou, plus tard, des historiens. En France, lorsqu’à la faveur de la Révolution le principe national s’impose, c’est à une vaste reprise en main des archives qu’on assiste : tri, centralisation, classement, légalisation et contrôle de l’accès aux textes en constituent autant de moments essentiels.
