L’objectif de cet article est d’aborder à l’aide de quelques entrées la question de la rationalisation du droit et de l’État dans l’Encyclopédie. Les entrées Crime, Peine et Clémence contribuent à fixer les repères, encore qu’en abrégé, pour un remodelage organique et une reconsidération profonde de la justice pénale au 18e siècle.
