Abstract

L'A. presente deux ouvrages d'auteurs americains decrivant le role central que jouent les idees et les sentiments ethniques et nationaux en tant que moteurs de l'histoire. Liah Greenfield part d'une construction theorique rigoureuse. Elle etudie l'histoire de l'idee de nation dans cinq pays pour conclure que la seule veritable nation, civique et individualiste selon ses criteres, est l'Angleterre. L'idee de nation est une creation politique et non pas consequence d'exigences economiques. Patrick Moynihan propose de montrer les dangers de l'ethnicite pour la paix mondiale. Faute de definitions rigoureuses, ses analyses restent ambigues : meme si les enjeux de conflits sont formules en terme d'ethnicite, il est un peu simple d'en conclure une relation causale
