Beyond economic man: Adam Smith's concept of the agent and the role of deception

Abstract

Résumé En m’appuyant sur la "Théorie des Sentiments Moraux" d’Adam Smith, je me propose d’analyser et de développer mon hypothèse selon laquelle la tricherie est inévitable dans le domaine social. Les acteurs de Smith qui ne cessent de se tromper eux-mêmes parce qu’ils ne peuvent pas prendre un point de vue impartial, sont comparés à l’ homo œconomicus comme modèle standard des agents économiques. Mon analyse vise à démontrer qu’Adam Smith et les économistes modernes arrivent à des points de vue opposés concernant la tricherie. Alors que le premier considère que la tromperie et les illusions sont cruciales pour comprendre l’échange, les seconds envisagent la tricherie en termes d’inefficacité qui entrave l’échange, et finalement le rend impossible.
