The Signal Gait of the Human

Abstract

Cet essai rend compte de ma découverte de l’importance de Stanley Cavell. Initialement conçu comme un hommage, ce texte s’avère être plutôt une méditation sur l’enseignement à propos de la lecture, de la lecture de l’autre, et de la lecture de soi par l’autre, que nous pourrions recevoir de Cavell. Il est simultanément un examen de l’idée que l’écriture est un mode de lecture, et la lecture un mode d’écriture. Il se trouve que la façon de penser de Cavell m’a été révélée durant mon terrain de recherche anthropologique à Zanzibar sur le compagnonnage entre les humains et les esprits. C’est pourquoi je retrace ici les contingences de cette révélation, et relate la manière dont la pensée de Cavell est intimement liée aux notions de rythme, de doute, de silence, de pauvreté, et de beauté.
