Abstract

En la Edad Media los arabes descollaron en la ciencia de la farmacologia y afines. No solo tradujeron e introdujeron en Occidente escritos de los clasicos griegos, sino que ellos mismos compusieron materias medicas y tratados farmacologicos y geoponicos en los que recogieron una tradicion que puede rastrearse hasta Mesopotamia, Egipto, Persia o la India, tradicion que mejoraron y ampliaron con sus propias experiencias. El desarrollo de esta ciencia en al-Andalus fue especialmente importante y su influencia en nuestra cultura espanola tiene un vivo testimonio en voces de nuestro vocAbūlario de claro origen arabe, o de adquisicion a traves del arabe, como alheli, alquitira, alhena, sebesten, zumaque, etc. De igual modo, importantes obras del Renacimiento espanol como El libro de agricultura general de Alonso de Herrera1 o la version castellana de la Materia medica de Dioscorides realizada por Laguna2 tienen una importante deuda con el desarrollo de este genero en al-Andalus.
