On a recent stay in Madrid I was given the privilege of working on a collection of works by Ramon del Valle-Inclan in the Libreria Mirto. In addition to the more commonly known works and editions of this author the collection contained several works closely related to El ruedo iberico which had appeared in cheap novelette editions such as La Novela Mundial and La Novela Semanal during the author's lifetime. A number of these are known already to students of Valle-Inclan through the biobiblio-graphy of Valle-Inclan by Jose Rubia Barcia and through various critical articles. It is of particular interest because of the relation it bears to the cycle El ruedo iberico and, as I hope to show below, may have been the first section of this to be written.
