The BRICS and their relationship with the two largest economies

Abstract

O expressivo crescimento da economia chinesa nas últimas décadas aproximou sua capacidade produtiva da dos Estados Unidos, superando-a em paridade de poder de compra e com possibilidade de ultrapassá-la também em termos nominais. Esse avanço gerou preocupações nos EUA, resultando em medidas internas com viés protecionista. A China, principal integrante dos BRICS, tem forte presença no grupo, com a maioria dos países membros apresentando déficit comercial com ela — exceto o Brasil. O crescimento chinês e sua liderança nos BRICS despertam reações defensivas da potência hegemônica (EUA), criando pressões internacionais para que outros países se alinhem a uma das potências. O objetivo dos BRICS de influenciar a governança global pode intensificar essas tensões e gerar retaliações aos seus membros, caso suas decisões contrariem interesses de terceiros.
