Abstract

As valvas cardíacas permitem que o sangue flua livremente através do coração em uma direção quando estão abertas, e impedem o fluxo de volta quando estão fechadas. A maioria das doenças das valvas resulta em estenose, que obstrui o fluxo sanguíneo normal, ou regurgitação, que causa fluxo de volta. A estenose da valva cria pressão extra no ventrículo esquerdo ou direito, pois essas câmaras precisam gerar uma pressão maior do que o normal para superar a obstrução e manter o fluxo adequado. A regurgitação valvar aumenta o volume de sangue que o coração precisa bombear para compensar o sangue que vaza de volta. Em casos graves, essas condições podem levar à disfunção ventricular, insuficiência cardíaca e até mesmo morte súbita.
