Abstract

Desenvolvida na década de 50, a inseminação artificial (IA) é comumente utilizada em galos, perus e aves em extinção, mas não é uma técnica rotineira em codornas. A ausência de diluente específico para a espécie, as dificuldades atreladas à coleta e análise do sêmen e a falta de informações relacionadas à concentração espermática, dose inseminante, proporção sêmen:diluente e profundidade de deposição do sêmen para a IA, consistem em entraves ao progresso e sucesso da técnica. Entretanto, mesmo com esses entraves, alguns estudos demostram que a fertilidade obtida através da IA em codornas com sêmen fresco pode chegar a 81,4% quando realizada 3 inseminações a cada 3 dias na mesma fêmea. Além disso, embora menos usual, evidências indicam que a taxa de fertilidade com sêmen refrigerado pode alcançar 37,07%. Sendo assim, nesta revisão, foram compiladas informações relacionadas ao comportamento reprodutivo, aos diferentes métodos de coleta de sêmen e aos avanços na técnica da inseminação artificial em codornas com intuito de possibilitar melhor compreensão.
