Dopaje genético: métodos y genes implicados

Abstract

El dopaje genético es una práctica ilegal que consiste en la modificación de genes para alterar la fisiología del organismo, con el objeto de mejorar el rendimiento deportivo. El desarrollo de la ingeniería genética y de la terapia génica posibilitan el uso de esta práctica y su expansión en los próximos años. El uso de virus adenoasociados es la técnica más empleada para la manipulación y transferencia de genes modificados a una célula diana. Actualmente no existen datos confirmados de dopaje genético en humanos, pero hay una gran cantidad de genes susceptibles de ser modificados y que se pueden emplear. Experimentos en modelos animales han demostrado que la eritropoyetina podría ser el mejor candidato, por su mayor relación riesgo/beneficio. La efectividad de la hormona de crecimiento no está demostrada en atletas entrenados y los factores de crecimiento pueden dar lugar a cáncer. La detección del dopaje genético es muy compleja y se están mejorando los métodos actuales, como la técnica basada en la reacción encadenada de la polimerasa.
