Suction Caisson Installation in Layered Soils – Observations From Installations

Abstract

Limited experience is available in the public domain for suction caisson installation in layered soil conditions. Complex and variable site conditions comprising silty sand, sand with silt/clay beds and layered soil conditions affect the installation and make predictions difficult. Various mechanisms can be encountered during suction caisson installation in layered soil conditions such as: reaching cavitation pressure limit, reaching structural capacity of caissons, lack of seal, piping, heave and tilt during self-weight penetration. This paper presents experience gained and key observations from the installation of 87 caissons in cohesionless soils and layered soil conditions at the Seagreen offshore wind farm (OWF) in the North Sea. Some of the successfully employed mitigation measures during installation are discussed and presented. Lessons learnt from the installations are also shared in this paper.
