La eficiencia energética en vehículos livianos es un factor importante para las empresas automotrices como para el consumidor final. Las diferentes marcas de vehículos calculan el consumo de combustible utilizando estándares propios de la industria automotriz sin considerar factores externos, tales como, la densidad del aire, entre otros. Por lo que el valor proporcionado por el fabricante es un valor referencial que puede diferir del real. El objetivo de este estudio es analizar el efecto que tiene la densidad del aire en el consumo de combustible de un vehículo de uso general en el Ecuador. Para lograr nuestro objetivo realizamos una simulación Model-in-the-Loop (MIL). Para este estudio se consideraron factores externos característicos de distintas localizaciones geográficas en Ecuador. Se determinó que en las ciudades evaluadas de la región Costa, el consumo de combustible del vehículo fue aproximadamente de 7.214 L/100 km, mientras que la sierra de 6.842 L/100 km. Así, el efecto de la resistencia aerodinámica (la densidad del aire) es reducir el consumo de combustible en la región Sierra en aproximadamente 5%.
