Abstract

Objective: To determine the characteristics and type of postoperative complications of intestinal anastomosis performed in patients of a level IV hospital, Lima-Peru. 2024. Materials and methods: This is a cross-sectional descriptive observational research study, using a data collection form to study the complications and clinical, epidemiological and laboratory characteristics of 50 patients who underwent intestinal anastomosis. Results: 44% (22/50) patients presented postoperative complications, postoperative ileus being the most frequent. They were males (59.1 %), older adults (63.6 %), with no history of smoking (90.9 %), and had previous abdominal surgery (90.9 %). Antibiotic prophylaxis with ceftriaxone and metronidazole (68.2 %); polyethylene glycol and enema (72.7 %) for bowel preparation and conventional approach (77.3 %), the configuration was terminal end (59.1 %), the type of suture was manual (59.1 %) and the operative time was greater than 180 min (59.1) and hypoproteinemia (59.9 %). Conclusions: Postoperative complications due to intestinal anastomosis surgery are frequent, mainly postoperative ileus. complicated patients presented a prolonged operative time and intraoperative transfusion was not a frequent characteristic.
