Abstract

En humanos, es una enfermedad parasitaria poco frecuente, encontrándose principalmente en el tracto respiratorio, senos paranasales y vías urinarias principalmente de pacientes inmunosuprimidos. El diagnóstico se establece por la identificación del protozoo en muestras como aspirados traqueales o lavados broncoalveolares mediante la observación microscópica en el examen directo o mediante técnicas moleculares. Cabe destacar que se debe realizar una diferenciación entre el microorganismo con las células epiteliales bronquiales ciliadas por sus características similares en forma, disposición de cilios y núcleos; lo que facilita su confusión en las muestras en fresco. El parásito presenta diferencias en movimiento y forma de los cilios en comparación con las células. La tinción de Leifson ayuda a distinguir la forma columnar, núcleos rojos con citoplasma azul y los cilios de las células epiteliales bronquiales y permite distinguirlas del protozoo.
