Abstract

Si bien los contactos entre los pobladores del área inca o andina y el área amazónica datan de 5000 años atrás, en ambos espacios se observa un desarrollo cultural asimétrico a lo largo de los milenios. Se plantea que esta asimetría cultural no puede ser explicada por una capacidad intelectual mayor o menor de andinos o de amazónicos, pues ambos descienden de ramas de un mismo tronco racial, el paleomongol. En consecuencia, el desfase en el proceso cultural debe de tener otras raíces. Estas podrían deberse a condicionantes medioambientales. Acaso este factor fue el que marcó la disparidad cultural que se percibe, si se compara a los pobladores andinos con los amazónicos. Consideramos que las referidas diferencias culturales existentes entre amazónicos y andinos son las que parecen explicar también la presencia del antagonismo étnico reinante entre unos y otros. De estas diferencias hay noticias en las crónicas de los siglos XVI y XVII, que permiten descubrir su existencia ya en tiempos del incario. En estas fuentes hay menciones concretas al desprecio que, por entonces, los cordilleranos ya demostraban frente a los selváticos, a quienes despóticamente llamaban chunchos. Este desdén étnico frente a los amazónicos originarios subsiste, velada o abiertamente, aún en nuestros días, entre nosotros.
