Estequiometria da remoção convencional de nitrogênio em sistemas de lodo ativado

Abstract

A intensificação e as melhorias no tratamento de águas residuárias desde o século XX aos tempos atuais buscaram minimizar os impactos da poluição hídrica, entretanto a persistência da eutrofização evidenciou que as remoções obtidas eram insuficientes para os nutrientes presentes nos esgotos e comprometia a qualidade dos corpos d’água. Diante desse desafio, sistemas de lodo ativado foram aprimorados, incorporando processos biológicos para a remoção eficiente de nitrogênio e fósforo. A nitrificação e a desnitrificação tornaram-se fundamentais para o controle das formas nitrogenadas, permitindo maior eficiência na depuração dos efluentes. A aplicação da estequiometria nesses processos possibilita a estimativa precisa da demanda de oxigênio e alcalinidade, sendo essencial para o dimensionamento e a otimização operacional. Neste estudo, discutem-se os balanços de massa para a conversão do nitrogênio, a influência da síntese celular das bactérias nitrificantes e os impactos na geração de biomassa. Os resultados reforçam que a abordagem estequiométrica é uma ferramenta quantitativa robusta para o planejamento e a operação de sistemas biológicos.
