Le Moyen Age a enrichi le bapteme du point de vue theologique, mais aussi du point de vue de la pratique liturgique et pastorale. Ce sont les trois aspects soulignes par l'A. bien que son attention se porte specialement sur l'evolution theologique. Il developpe ce theme en s'interessant de maniere systematique a la pensee des differents auteurs en insistant particulierement sur celle de Thomas d'Aquin. Entre la pensee patristique et scolastique, il y a a la fois continuite et rupture, une avancee en ce qui concerne la systematisation theologique et une certaine perte des categories du symbole-mystere
