Abstract

In the Canary Islands Autonomous Community, where the authority to organize competitive sports has been delegated by the Public Administration to the Canarian sports federations, violence in sports has continued to rise. This is due, in part, to the underutilization of “naming and shaming” techniques for correcting deviant behavior. Following recent legal debates on the compliance of this measure with data protection regulations, this paper analyzes, from the perspective of Political Science and Public Administration, the need to generalize “naming and shaming” in Canarian federated sports as a basic principle of transparency. This is essential in a public activity (sport) that the federations carry out by (revocable) delegation from the Government of the Canary Islands, and is also due to its proven effectiveness in preventing violent acts.
