Abstract

Kambing peranakan ettawa (PE) merupakan salah satu kambing lokal yang berpotensi besar untuk dikembangkan di Indonesia. Kambing PE yang banyak dikembangkan adalah kambing kaligesing. Kambing kaligesing banyak diperdagangkan sebagai bibit. Pada prakteknya, penentuan bibit kambing kaligesing menggunakan sistem grading. Permasalahannya adalah system grading tersebut tidak mengacu pada standar bibit kambing PE berdasarkan SNI 7352:2008. Perlunya usaha penyesuaian sistem grading yang berlaku di tingkat peternak dengan standar bibit kambing PE sehingga dapat dijadikan acuan bagi peternak untuk mencapai produksi yang tinggi secara kualitas maupun kuantitas. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui kesesuaian sistem grading di tingkat peternak dengan standar bibit kambing PE (SNI 7352:2008). Hasil penelitian menujukkan bahwa kambing kaligesing dengan grade A dan B berada di atas standar bibit kambing PE. Sedangkan kambing kaligesing grade C berada di bawah standar bibit kambing PE terutama pada kelompok umur >1-2 tahun dan >2 tahun. Dengan demikian, kambing kaligesing grade A dan B termasuk dalam kategori bibit sedangkan kambing kaligesing grade C tidak termasuk dalam kategori bibit sehingga dapat diperjual belikan sebagai kambing potong. Kambing kaligesing grade C dapat diperjual belikan secara bebas ke luar daerah.
