Hablemos del virus del papiloma humano

Abstract

El papilomavirus humano o también conocido como virus del papiloma humano (VPH) es una infección de transmisión sexual considerada un grave problema de salud pública a nivel mundial debido a que la mayor parte de la población sexualmente activa la ha contraído en algún momento de su vida. Si bien la infección por virus del papiloma humano es asintomática en la mayoría de los casos y suele desaparecer con ayuda del sistema inmunitario, existen una serie de variantes de VPH de alto riesgo asociadas a diferentes tipos de cáncer con elevada mortalidad que hacen del VPH más que una simple infección. Por lo anterior, resulta fundamental la prevención a través de estrategias de vacunación, promoción de la salud y educación sexual dirigidas a la población en general antes y durante el inicio de una vida sexual activa.
