Abstract

A escoliose idiopática do adolescente é uma deformidade tridimensional da coluna vertebral que engloba a curvatura do plano coronal e a rotação no eixo axial, com desvios rotatório e translacional máximos, ocorrendo no ápice da curva. A etiologia permenece desconhecida, porém existem muitas teorias prospostas. As teorias mais citadas da literatura são: fatores genéticos, distúrbios ósseos, distúrbios musculares, alterações do disco intervertebral, anormalidades do crescimento e causas de origem do sistema nervoso central. Os sistemas de classificação são usados para avaliar entidade clínica, ajudar o cirurgião a escolher o melhor tratamento para cada caso específico. Os objetivos do tratamento cirúrgico da escoliose idiopática são melhorar o equilíbrio sagital e prevenir a progressão da curva. O melhor método para conseguir a correção é a instrumentação acrescida de fusão, podendo ser obtida por via anterior, via posterior ou combinada em alguns casos.
